Electromagnetic Metamaterials: Prospects and Challenges

Abstract: Almost four decades after the theoretical investigation of interesting phenomena associated with negative index of refraction by Veselago, J.B. Pendry in 1999 demonstrated that negative index can be practically achieved by carefully engineering metal-dielectric composites. Pendry’s study sparked a new research domain towards engineering composites, named as metamaterials, aiming to achieve desired electromagnetic properties. Metamaterials are sub wavelength periodic composites of metal and dielectric, engineered to exhibit unusual properties not found in naturally occurring materials. These unusual properties give rise to many potential applications of metamaterials including perfect lens, high resolution imaging, high-precision lithography, invisibility cloaks, optical analog simulators, small antennas, and solar cells. Interestingly, the electromagnetic properties of metamaterial are not only dependent on its constitutive materials but are a strong function of their periodic structures which can be controlled almost arbitrarily by changing constitutive materials and/or its geometry.

This tutorial session is designed to provide an introduction to the field of metamaterials with special focus on the significant research thrust which is observable in past two decades. An investigation of some of the interesting applications of metamaterials will be covered including negative index of refraction based super lens, invisibility cloak, high efficiency perfect absorption, metamaterial antennas, and intelligent reflecting surfaces. Current research trends as well as orientation to some of the online resources related to the field will be provided during the session. Research prospects and the challenges associated to the development of metamaterials will also be discussed in the session focusing on providing guidelines to new researchers in the field.


A Deep Learning Approach to build AI-enabled Cognitive Radio Internet of Things Network

Abstract: The recent advancements in communication technologies have reshaped the lifestyle of people. Nowadays, users can access any service at any time irrespective of their location. This has become feasible due to the advent of emerging technology- the Internet of Things (IoT) [1]. IoT is a network that connects several objects and devices in a network to provide numerous services to the users. It has provided extended connectivity capabilities beyond simply an internet connection to accommodate every real object in the world. In addition to this, IoT has been continuously contributing to enhance human life and add more levels of comfort and boost the country's economy [2]. IoT has laid the foundation of ubiquitous computing. It has facilitated many  fields such as health care, weather monitoring, trace management system, mobile networks, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs), vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V), 5G and 6G and many more [3]. In the health care system, a patient uses a smart band that monitors heart rate, blood pressure (BP), and sugar level continuously and report immediately to the doctor if any abnormality arises in health conditions. Similarly, in the transport management system, the vehicle can take advantage of sensors deployed on roads and trace lights that guide the commuters about the possible congestion, accident, and blockage on a road on their smartphones. Moreover, in weather monitoring and forecasting, sensors-based IoT networks can assist in determining the weather of a certain city or country. Nevertheless, the applications of IoT are countless and we can perceive the future technology entirely based on IoT. IoT is a network of several interconnected objects. Therefore; it is essential to introduce cognitive capabilities into the devices/objects in a network. Hence, giving the name Cognitive Radio IoT network (CR-IoT) [3]. Devices with intelligent and cognitive capabilities in CR-IoT make the entire network adaptive, autonomous and efficient. AI has been facilitating many  fields and CR-IoT has evolved in a more sophisticated way due to the advancements in AI technology. There are a variety of Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques incorporated into CR-IoT network devices to build the network more intelligent, robust, and autonomous.

The proposed tutorial will highlight the proliferation of the CR-IoT network and how AI has been the main driving force in building information and communication technologies intelligent and autonomous? Moreover, the tutorial will cover the hands-on activities related to the CR-IoT in Python. The detail of the tutorial is as follow.

The duration of the tutorial session will be 2 hours. I plan to cover the following contents in two phases:

First Phase 1 hour:

Introduction of IoT and CR-IoT network followed by a brief insight on how AI has been facilitating the emerging technologies to become self-aware, autonomous, and intelligent networks ?

Second Phase 1 hour:

  1. Introduction to Python and its different IDE (basic examples).
  2. Modelling CR-IoT network devices given problem following Gaussian and standard normal Gaussian distribution in Python.
  3. Modelling the interaction between a cognitive mobile device and a base station (tower) or between a smart car and a UAV in a CR-IoT network using a dynamic Bayesian network model in Python.
  4. Exploiting and analysing the measure of central tendency in signals receiving at the cognitive device radio device in Python.

IEEE has been striving to provide such opportunities for their members and volunteers to learn and apply the new knowledge and skills that can help them in their job and further their career. Any professional development skill is not only for just your upbringing, this also help for your employer and society at large also. IEEE is the largest professional organization of engineers and technologist and set their mission and vision is “Advancing Technology for Humanity”. Today our world is facing many challenges including climate change and global warming; poverty; lack of education; HIV/AIDS and several infectious diseases; civil conflict; lack of drinking water and basic infrastructure; human rights violations; terrorism; and extreme weather; sea level rise, to state a few. The challenges are perhaps greater than ever before in the history of globe. IEEE has a unique role and acknowledges its responsibility towards addressing and lessening these challenges that face humanity through technological innovation and with the help and support of their dedicated volunteers.
